Dice and Combat

Dice System of the Black Caste

An applicant (male and female) to the caste rolls 2d20 in combat and *cannot* Assassinate. No person may claim to be an applicant to the caste unless the Caste of Assassins informs that person to do so.

A male pledge to the caste rolls 2d21, females roll 2d20, in combat and *cannot* Assassinate. Male pledges have the ability to gain up to 2d22 with skill tests, Gorean knowledge tests, and personality tests. Female can gain 2d21.

Standard female Assassin roll 2d21.

Standard male Assassin roll 2d22.

Elder female Assassin roll 2d22.

Elder male Assassin roll 2d23.

For dice scale, see Hunting.

Acceptance of other Dice formats

Most of the Black Caste do not accept any human who is not mounted rolling over 2d24. Many warriors will add a side to their dice for things like Home Stone defense, preferred tactic, caste seniority, etc… We will not accept their dice rolling higher for many reasons. Some simple reasons are:

Home Stone = We have no Home Stone, we have no desire or need to seize your Home Stone, we are not invading, with the dagger displayed we are free to enter any city we wish as ALL of Gor is our home.

Preferred Tactic = We do not fight like you, when facing us in combat we do not fight like the opponents you trained with, you are therefore unable to display your skill by 'familiar' tactical combat. If you have an advantage we would remove it in simple ways perhaps by closing range or side step fighting. We do not fight as you would call "Honorable," we have our own ways, that are just as adept if not more so than your own.

Caste Seniority, beyond one side adjustment = We will not recognize forums that constantly seem to have "private anatomy" contest by seeing who can raise their dice the highest for this that and the other thing. We have compromised with you already, we have gone as far as we will go.

  1. Most, if not all, of the Black Caste do accept kurii who roll 2d25. The same amount might not even accept kurii, period. Any augmentation or raising of these dice will not be accepted. Remember though, you will almost never find a Kur in a city environment, But if you did you could count on VAST numbers of NPC's to side with you against the Beast. Use your mind and be realistic in your Story Line.

  2. We DO accept persons raising the sides of their dice by 1 when mounted on Tarn, Kaiila, or Thalarion. This is under the assumption that the person mounted on the animal is skilled in the animals use and movements. If a Free Woman hops on a kaiila she does not own, or know how to ride one and wants to roll 2d22's it will not be accepted. However if a Warrior mounts a thalarion he may roll one side more than normal (if he is a normal warrior this means he could roll 2d23 mounted, if he is a veteran warrior [equivalent to our elder assassins] he may roll 2d24 mounted)

  3. We do not accept female slaves rolling dice for combat unless it is vs. another female slave. We do accept fighting male slaves. A man collared still retains his dice, hit points, and strength. A Warrior who becomes a slave, should keep their "strength" in dice.

  4. We do NOT under any circumstances ever acknowledge a female who rolls higher dice than 2d21, with the exception of a mounted woman that knows how to ride the kaiila/tharlarion, and an Elder Female Assassin who is allowed to use 2d22's.

Dealing with dice forums we don't accept:

Every situation is unique and will require intelligent thought and rule use on your part. Below are listed some of the most common examples you will run into and how they should be handled. Again, each situation is unique, and you may have to modify usage.

Scenario 1) You enter combat with someone of the Caste of Warriors. He has NOT been in the caste for 1 player year(therefor not Elder Status, the RC calls it Veteran Status) and rolls 2d23 or higher and is unmounted. Inform him that you do not accept his dice and that you only acknowledge 2d23 unmounted when he has been in either the Caste of Warriors for more than one player year. If he is unwilling to change his dice, then you change your dice to reflect the dice he wants to roll. For example if he changes his dice from 2d22 to 2d23, then that was raised by one side. This means that you will raise your dice by one side also, regardless what the result would be. So if you are an Elder Assassin, fighting a Normal (not veteran) Warrior who chooses to roll 2d23 unmounted. Then your dice, while fighting in that match, would be 2d24.

Scenario 2) You are in a public room and a Brawl breaks out. If you are an Elder Assassin you raise your dice equal to the highest dice rolled in the room "on the opposing side" so long as it is not lower than your standard dice. If you are a Standard Assassin you raise your dice to one side below the highest dice in the room so long as it is not lower than your standard dice. If you happen to know the ranking of the person in the room who is rolling highest (Veteran/Elder or Normal/Standard) then you may adjust your dice according to your comparison to them.

Examples:

  • if you are an Elder and he is a Veteran or you are Standard and he is Normal then you may roll as he is.

  • if you are Elder and he is Normal, then you roll one higher than him

  • if you are Standard and he is Veteran then you would roll one less than him

Scenario 3) You are an Standard Assassin, and are hunting a Veteran Warrior in the City of Ko Ro Ba. You attempt to Assassinate him, you are seen and wound him for 6pts of damage, he forces you to a Death Match. At the start of this Death Match he states the following:

"I am Deputy Ubar of Ko Ro Ba, I roll 2d24"
"I am in Ko Ro Ba, my Home Stone, and get a bonus of 1 side"
"I am using my sword in melee combat which is my specialty and get a bonus of one side"
"I am going to roll 2d26, you are just BC and don't get any bonuses you roll 2d22"

At this point it would be prudent to state the following:

"I recognize that you may roll higher than me… ONE side higher than me as you are Veteran and I am not Elder"
"I am not attacking your Home Stone, you get no bonus for it's defense"
"You may be using your sword, but this will not be some foolish Rarius sword swinging, you will be fighting a Killer, not a fool that will swing a blade in the standard fashion, you get no bonus for preferred tactic, you'll be lucky if you get to use your sword arm at all"
"I am a Standard Assassin, you are a Veteran Warrior, I recognize that you will roll 1 side higher than me. If you roll 2d26, I will roll 2d25… if you understand what I'm saying and will roll 2d23 then I will roll 2d22."

**Or, instead of all this, males can simply match dice and females use 2d21. Some of those who enjoy delusions of being bigger and better than everyone else in the world will have problems with this. They can always scream player consent and go on their way, blinders and all**
