Members and Membership
Regulations for Members

  1. An Assassin may not carry, or use, poison to kill or assist in killing anyone. This does not mean that if someone is under the treatment of a physician that you may not kill them. If that were the case your mark could drug himself as a safety net. This does include owning a slave that has poison saliva, or a collar with poison/venom laced needles. You own that slave, in thus you own that poison.

  2. A member may/will not be of any Home Stone. When he joins the caste he looses all ties to his birthplace, a family and, in essence, everything they were. The caste is your family, coin is your Home Stone.

  3. An Assassin may/will not own a House/Organization of alternate loyalty or be part of/leader of another Organization. (Special exemptions are made for Ubar approved BlackCaste organizations. But to be a leader of a house or organization that is not BlackCaste affiliated has proven to promote weakness and disloyalty. The Caste is always first).

  4. Caste first, always.  This includes family.  One must exercise caution, if loved ones are involved.  First, no discussion of caste business with family members, who are not of the caste is to be tolerated.  Second, a man's family is a good way to get to the man.  Guard them and yourself, carefully.

  5. A member may/will not break the Caste Codes, written or otherwise. If a member of the Brotherhood does so he will be moved to probationary status until the Ubar and viziers review the action or actions and pass judgment. If the offense is extreme, the member can/will be killed without so much as a dice roll.

  6. Any member who breeds disloyalty, doubt, corruption, or plants the seeds for an inter-caste war will be brought before the Ubar for immediate determination of guilt and judgment. This counts for OOC as well. We don't need people trying to split up the caste through lies and backstabbing.

  7. Any repeated violation of the TOS rules will have your character removed and hunted from the Registered Black Caste forum. Proof will be acquired for altercations such as these.

  8. Female members have been previously restricted from couching or preparing to couch with a male slave. After long debates with many sides represented, females of the Caste may conduct themselves sexually as they please with their own male slave(s) so long as it is done privately and discreetly. Females who are witnessed couching, preparing to couch, showing moderate sexual attention to, or otherwise conducting a display of sexuality with another's male slave may be collared by those present or a Brethren of the Caste.

This activity, as well as a sexual nature revealed to more than one male, in or out of the Caste, may also be reported to the chairs who will make a determination. Sisters of the Caste are Free and must act accordingly. In any case the Ubar and viziers will review the facts and make the ultimate determination on guilt, betrayal, and revenge. As for Sisters who are collared, they are no longer Killers by legal right, and they will not be permitted to live as their minds hold secrets of the Brotherhood.

  9. There is no retirement from the Caste. The only way to leave the Caste is through death. This is the same with slaves. There is no "retirement" from being owned by the Caste. Caste slaves (not personal slaves) are not to be sold, or freed, but killed. If they were Caste slaves before, then they are to be killed.

  10. All members regardless of station, stature, or popularity will follow the caste codes (both written and unwritten) at all times unless a special condition is presented by the Chairs.

  11. A member whose SN is deleted for more than 72 player hours without some sort of notice to the Ubar, or counsel will be removed from the registered members list. If you are inactive for months, you will receive a notice, then it will be carried on from there. If you are removed, you may attempt to become re-registered by going through the processing needed. Depending on the reason for deletion, or inactivity.

  12. After you make it in the Caste doesn't mean that you simply get to fill up the slot. We understand real life and the problems it can have, though if you cannot put in time in playing the character, you're holding up a place where fresh blood can be and can, or will be, removed for inactivity. Caste mail also tends to be important, especially if entitled "Must/Please Read." If these are repeatedly deleted, your character can be removed from the listing and hunted for noncompliance. There may be a reason for you not to sign on, but not to delete important mail that is marked important.

  13. All members regardless of station, stature, or popularity will put the Caste before all else. Caste, Brothers, Gold, Steel.

  14. NEW! 9/03 It has been found out that there are some people who has characters in more than one Black Caste. If it is found that crossing is going on, where the other Caste knows of what ours is doing, then your character will be killed without so much as a dice roll, and subsequently removed from the roster. You want your other character/Caste to know what the Black Caste is up to? FIND OUT IC

Gaining Membership

Anyone wishing to join the Black Caste must send an e-mail to the Ubar with a simple statement expressing their desire. This can be done in a few ways. It can be an OOC explanation. It can be RP placed into the mail of the scroll being written out. Or, and this is what I suggest, you can write out in story form (or copy and paste RP) into a mail of your character finding the tavern, writing the note, and leaving it. This allows the Ubar (and any others who might be presented with your play) can make a fair judgment of your level of playing ability. While we are not elitists, we do prefer quality over quantity. After your initial contact, you will be told what to do next, either IC or OOC.

Below is a list of segmented sections that describe the entry process. Anyone who takes the "Oath of Brotherhood" and fails any part of the proceeding entry process will be killed. All sections are rated on a percentage scale. If the inductee scores below 75% on any phase he fails (if he scores so low on any section of any phase that regardless of your succeeding scores you will not pass the phase as a whole - you do not continue the process). Failure equals death.

It is not my ego that makes things as they are. It is the way of the Brotherhood. On average only 1 in 10 people who apply to the caste actually make it. The testing process has been set up to as closely match the mentions in the book as possible. This being AOL there is one spot where we must differ. Good luck to each of you, and yes.... Luck is always a factor.

The average length of time for the entry process is two to three months. This is if you role-play often. Don't try to get into the Caste by applying one week, then coming around two weeks later expecting to be moved from applicant to pledge. We encourage role-play, which is why we state you must find a Killer IC to have your character express their want to train into the Caste. There are no "throw away SNs" in the Black Caste. Those that are here for the role play and enjoy the development of a character will have no problem with this. Those in it for the 'power' or 'infamy' will have a problem with the waiting period.

The Brotherhood is no longer looking to increase the number of its members, but rather only to increase the quality of its members. Quality over quantity. We stay small and strong, accepting only those deemed the best within our ranks. This may seem we are picky about role-play, when, in truth, we are. We're not going to be accepting everyone that wants to join. If your Gorean knowledge isn't up to par, then most likely you won't be accepted.

Warning: The process will be twice as hard, and twice as long for females. Failure means death. For females to prove themselves, the process must be completed with utmost perfection. People think it is bad enough that we have females in the Caste, though.. no where in the books did it say they weren't there. Only mentioned that females aren't allowed as sword using Warriors, and Initiates. You show me where it says females can't be in the Caste of Killers (which is akin to the Ninja society - and yes, there were female Ninja) and I will remove every single last female. We have the right to use OOC information, such as poor RP, or the such, to remove you. We're not looking for quantity, but quality.

As for the players; male, or female, doesn't matter.

The Black Caste reserves the right to use OOC information on the acceptance or rejection of a potential member. We do not need players who show habitual bad RP or OOC vindictiveness. This has been common and we ensure that this will not be the case.

It is against policy to permit more than one character per player to enter the caste at the same time. If it is found that someone has more than one SN in the entry process all applicable characters will be removed and will not be permitted to reapply for 1 player year.

Remember, below is for those that do not wish to challenge a "registered" Assassin for his/her position. It will be ensured that the character is not a delete/restore before the Challenger decision is allowed. Since there seems to be some confusion on this.. anyone that wishes to return to the Caste can do so through challenge, or proven acceptance. That is only if a valid reason was given as to why the once Black Caste member was gone. If it is a Challenger who was not of the Caste to begin with, they will have to be tested mentally and physically to show that they can be Killers in mind and body instead of someone that just got lucky with the roll of the dice and have no knowledge of Killers way. This has to be an agreed upon SL, and only those who are not the Ubar, or upon the council can be challenged.

Elder Pledge

On occasion a pledge will be afforded the opportunity to become an "Elder Pledge." Once/If a pledge gains elder status he will gain the ability to roll 2d22 (2d21 for females) and match combat dice as a fully registered member. The final word for a pledge's elder/non-elder status rests with the Ubar.

The requirements pledges are graded on before they gain elder status are (but not restricted to) as follows:

  1. Completion of Phase Two

  2. At least four successful AA's as assigned and judged by the mentor choosen.

  3. Detailed and complex training with both the Killing Knife and the Crossbow to the point they can be judged skilled in their use.

  4. Detailed and complex training in the areas of Stealth, Cover, Concealment, and Disguise.

  5. Detailed and complex training in the various approved stalking methods used by the Black Caste.

Note: Most pledges will not gain Elder status.

Removal from the Caste

There are various ways to be removed from the Brotherhood of Assassins. They commonly consist of breaking of caste codes (majority of which are not listed in these pages). The most common and specific examples of caste removal are listed below in the order that they most often occur. There is only one (IC) method with which to leave or be removed from the Caste of Assassins.... Death.

  1. Deletion of Character. If a character is deleted without notice to the caste for 72 or more hours, is deleted for an extended period of time, or deleted multiple times within a period not considered extended (ie... a restore delete character) he will be 'removed' from the caste. Those who delete dishonorably will not be welcomed back to the caste under any circumstances and hunted apon their return. (dishonorable deletion is determined at the time of deletion by acting Ubar and council).

  2. Critical Error of an Assassination. If a member of the caste fails to fulfill the proper criteria of a hunt and continues with the strike or strikes out of order the result is an "illegal kill." This is often met harshly by the caste resulting in the death of the Assassin in question.

  3. Treason. If a member of the caste leaks information to an outsider or to a caste facet that doesn't have access to the information in question that member has committed treason. This conduct may, though not always, result in the death of the Assassin in question. The penalty depends on the specifics. (depending on the severity, it isn't unknown for characters to be removed/slain due to their player blabbing their mouth to other players who use the information).

  4. Noncompliance to caste codes/policies. Simply what it says, a member of the caste who refuses to acknowledge or follow specific caste policies or codes as approved by chairs and populus will be removed. Compliance checks are given now and again to ensure Killers are active. No need to have one on the list if they're never around without some form of indication on what they're not around. Player live comes first, of course.

  5. High Treason. If a member of the caste attempts to breed disloyalty, doubt, or corruption in the caste; takes part in a coup; or modifies caste justice for personal gain he/she is guilty of High Treason which always results in the death of the traitor.

  6. AOL TOS violations. While we don't use player consent, badgering a player to take part in a hunt is harassment, and thus an AOL TOS violation. Also, stalking, harassing, repeatedly insulting a player that often blocks, or switches names to get away from Killer-player will have that Assassin removed from the Caste, hunted and killed.

Regaining Membership (after deletion)

A former member of the caste attempting to return after being removed for deletion that is not dishonorable must go thru a series of steps to do so. The burden of proof is always on the member wishing to return. The steps for reentry are listed below.

  1. Requesting individual must send notice to the Ubars council and/or caste scribe informing them of his return and his desire to rejoin the Brotherhood as a registered member.

  2. Requesting individual must make contact with individuals currently in the caste and in good standing who can vouch that the requester is without a doubt the same individual of old. This must be both an IC and OOC confirmation.

  3. 2 confirming members must send their confirmation to the Ubar and viziers of the Caste.

  4. Ubar and council meet with the Requester discussing his reasons for leaving, reasons for returning, and conduct (both pros and cons).

  5. Ubar will announce your return along with your reenacted caste oath.

  6. Requester is placed on probation for 28 player days for review of quality and conduct, should his 28 days end without notice of extension his reentry into the Brotherhood is complete. Probationary returning members are susceptible to caste justice just as fully as new members on probation.
